A More Detailed Explanation of Purpose
About a year after I had graduated from UNR (Go Pack!), I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After a couple of months of treatment, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to one of the lobes in my left lung, and a lobectomy was scheduled. Throughout the treatment and especially as I was transported to surgery, I thought a lot about my regrets. I never thought about the experiences I might not have, the places I might never go, or any of the other common material things that matter to a person in their early 20s. I most regretted not doing more for my family and friends, and also the possibility of not making the world around me a better place.
The lobectomy became a pneumonectomy during surgery and after almost a year of chemotherapy, I set about with a commitment to mitigating those regrets. Throughout my personal and professional life, I have been fortunate to attain leadership positions. It is through those positions and committing to servant leadership that I have had the biggest impact in assisting those in my immediate sphere to live in a better place.
However, I have come to realize that my current engagement in this purpose is mainly through one on one and group interactions, and again I find myself wanting to do more. Thus, the reasoning for using this platform; my goal here is to enlarge my sphere to not only help more people but to also learn more from others.
I am going to post stories about situations I have experienced, tell you what I did, and I welcome your feedback about my decisions. I will post my opinions and look forward to having conversations with you that open my eyes to different perspectives. I believe that leadership is a practice that revolves around finding a balance between being steadfast in my values and principles, while being open to different viewpoints and adaptable to the environment. I look forward to practicing with you.
